People -pour out your Spirit upon us.
Leader - God of fire, flaring on gathered disciples and burning away their stubborn pride,
People -pour out your Spirit upon us.
Leader - God of miraculous speaking and hearing, amazing the faithful and riveting their attention to what is about to happen,
People -pour out your Spirit upon us.
Leader - God of the young who see visions, of the old who dream dreams, of male prophets and female prophets,
People -pour out your Spirit upon us.
Leader - God of wonders above the signs below, God of blood, fire and billowing smoke,
People -pour out your Spirit upon us.
Leader - You raised up Peter to prophesy on Pentecost, Peter to preach straight truth to a crooked generation, Peter to accuse people he loved of complicity in the death of Jesus.
People -pour out your Spirit upon us.
Leader - God of wind and fire and tongues, God of visions and dreams and prophecies, God of signs and wonders,
People -pour out your Spirit upon us.

People -Great God, send your Spirit to save us too.
Leader - You sent your Spirit to assail hard hearts. You sent repentance and faith., baptism and forgiveness, teaching and fellowship, communion and prayer.
People -pour out your Spirit upon us.

*OPENING HYMN #280Come, O Spirit, Dwell Among Us

Come, O Spirit, dwell among us; Come with Pentecostal power;
give the church a stronger vision; help us face each crucial hour.
Built upon a firm foundation, Jesus Christ, the Cornerstone,
still the church is called to mission that God’s love shall be made known.

We would raise our alleluias for the grace of yester years;
for tomorrow’s unknown pathway, hear, O Lord, our humble prayers.
In the church’s pilgrim journey you have led us all the way;
still in presence move before us, fire by night and cloud by day.

Come, O Spirit, dwell among us; give us words of fire and flame.
Help our feeble lips to praise you, glorify your holy name.
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, Three in One: what mystery!
We would sing our loud hosannas now and through eternity.

PRAYER CONFESSING OUR NEED FOR GOD’S GRACE

God of fire and wind, we fear we have missed the movement of your Spirit in our lives and in your world. We have not always been a Spirit-led church. We have not consistently pursued your anointing or your sanctifying presence. We have not always lived in holiness. Forgive us, we pray. Free us from bondage to life in the Spirit, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

PASTORAL PRAYER

THE LORD’S PRAYER

As we pray together the Lord's Prayer, you are invited to say this in whatever version is most comforting and meaningful to you.  Here is one possible version (ecumenical version) that you can use:

Our Father, who is in heaven, holy be your name.

Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.  Amen.

SERMON       Pentecost Part II

MOMENT OF SILENT REFLECTION

*HYMN OF RESPONSE        #279    Come, Holy Spirit, Heavenly Dove

Come, Holy Spirit, heavenly Dove, with all thy quickening powers;
kindle a flame of sacred love in these cold hearts of ours.

In vain we tune our formal songs; In vain we strive to rise;
hosannas languish on our tongues, and our devotion dies.

Dear Lord, and shall we ever live at this poor dying rate?
Our love so faint, so cold to thee, and thine to us so great!

Come, Holy Spirit, heavenly Dove,
With all thy quickening powers; come, shed abroad a Savior’s love,
And that shall kindle ours.

Freeing uplifting opening eyes,

Three in Oneness, Love community,

Alleluia!  Alleluia!  Alleluia!

UNISON PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

Loving God, thank you for giving us a vision of understanding one another across all our differences. Continue to empower us to listen to one another.  To hear one another.  And to understand one another.  Amen.

CLOSING HYMN   #289   On Pentecost They Gathered

On Pentecost they gathered quite early in the day,
A band of Christ’s disciples, to worship, sing, and pray.
A mighty wind came blowing, filled all the swirling air,
And tongues of fire a glowing inspired each person there.

The people all around them were startled and amazed
To understand their language, as Christ the Lord they praise.
What universal message, what great good news was here?
That Christ, once dead, is risen to vanquish all our fear.

God pours the Holy Spirit on all who would believe,
On women, men, and children who would God’s grace receive.
That Spirit knows no limit, bestowing life and power.
The church, formed and reforming, responds in every hour.

O Spirit, sent from heaven on that day long ag
rekindle faith among us in all life’s ebb and flow.
O give us ears to listen and tongues aflame with praise,
So folk of every nation glad songs of joy shall raise.
